Croque Monsieur (Ellen)

serves 1

  • 1 slice ham
  • 1  or 2 slices gruyere cheese  (Swiss works also)/ enough to cover one slice of bread
  • mustard … poupon, of course
  • 2 slices French bread, sliced 3/4 inch thick or as desired
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 Tbs. milk
  • Butter to saute sandwich

1. Spread desired amount of mustard on bread.  Assemble sandwich with ham and cheese between slices.

2. Whisk egg and milk together and dip sandwich into egg mixture as if making French toast.

3. Saute in butter until bread is browned and cheese is melting. Serve immediately!

4.  Some French cookbook suggest trimming crusts.  Some also suggest serving a cheese sauce over the sandwich.

Cheese sauce (optional)

  • 1 Tbs. butter
  • 2 tsp. flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup shredded gruyere cheese
  • pinch of salt
  • dash of Worchesterchire sauce (opt)

1. Melt butter and whisk in flour.

2. Whisk milk into butter-flour mixture until smooth and heat on medium-low heat, stirring until thickened.  Add more milk if it is too thick.  Should be like cream soup.

3. Stir in cheese and seasonings.  When cheese is melted, drizzle sauce over sandwich.  Enjoy!!!
